I remember the day when I first opened my eyes to the world. Everything was a swirl of multicoloured hues. "The colours," I thought, "so many beautiful colours, just like in my dreams " Suddenly, everything swam into focus, albeit somewhat blurry. "Jacen oh Jacen can you see me? Look at Momma, boy," a familiar female voice drifted through my ears. "Humph, treated like a child again," I thought, but grinned at the same time. I could see! Momma always told me I only lost my sight when I was eleven months old, but as far as I was concerned, I had been blind for all the ten years of my life. Momma told me I was not completely blind, but the doctors all said I was as near to blindness as anyone could get. That was what led to the operation. I knew it cost my Da a lot, but he said it was worth it if it could restore my sight, though he knew that there was a chance the operation might end up a failure. My thoughts drifted back to the present as I saw a smiling woman dressed in a lively red and yellow dress standing by the side of my bed. "M Momma? I asked unsteadily. "Momma, I can see!" Sweeping myself off the bed, I rushed over to give her a hug, forgetting the cautious steps I used to take. Our embrace lasted for a good minute. Finally, Momma decided to take me out for awhile. "The doctor says you have to be put under observation for a while yet, but Ill take you for a snack downstairs," she told me. Momma and I walked together, and I was fascinated by all there was to see in the hospital. True, I had been to countless hospitals before, but all I could sense were the sounds and the smells. Now I was able to see, and it became a whole new experience. Laughing happily, I ordered a slice of cake and bit into it. Without Mommas help. Adjusting to my new perspective of the world was not simple, but a good bit easier than learning how to live my life without my eyes. After I finished eating, we took a walk in the garden. Skipping about gleefully, I happened to look up, and saw a majestic arch of colour hanging in the sky. "Momma, look! A rainbow!" I cried. Momma could only smile. |
